Athens Ciné to Show “Fright Night” at Schlocktoberfest 2022

ATHENS, Ga., Oct. 14, 2022 – Athens Ciné is showing “Fright Night” on Saturday, Oct. 15 as part of our “Schlocktoberfest 2022” event. Schlocktoberfest is a drive-in festival of horror that we are hosting throughout the month of October to bring the Athens community together.

Each Saturday leading up to Halloween, we are showing a gruesome horror movie from the 1980s -- hence the name Schlocktoberfest – to get visitors into the spirit of “spooky season”. Our thrill-seeking visitors previously enjoyed “The Thing” on Oct. 1, and “The Fly” on Oct. 8.

“We’re doing Halloween in Athens the right way,” says Pamela Kohn, executive director of Ciné. “No more dressing up as fairies and prancing around downtown. October is for gruesome, gut-wrenching horror, and being scared with your friends. What better way to do that than Schlocktoberfest? The horror-obsessed know they don’t want to miss this bloody mess.”

Playing on the name of the traditional German festival held throughout September and October, our refreshments for this event will be served at our “beer garden” located just beyond check-in. Horror fans can indulge fully, and responsibly, in the Halloween season with some screaming and a cold beer.

This Saturday’s showing of “Fright Night”, directed by Tom Holland, follows a horror obsessed teenager who discovers his next-door neighbor to be a murderous vampire. Movie-goers can enjoy this film at our drive-in experience by purchasing tickets online at Athenscine.com - Fright Night, and tuning into 95.1 FM when they arrive at their parking spot. Gates will open at 7 p.m. and the presentation begins at 8 p.m. Viewers should arrive by 7:15 p.m. to find their parking spot and purchase concessions prior to the film.

Head to our event website: SCHLOCKTOBERFEST 2022, Cine (athenscine.com) for the remaining movie titles and of course, stay scary.

Athens Ciné to Host “12 Days of Cinémas”

ATHENS, Ga., Dec. 5, 2022 – Athens Ciné is hosting “12 Days of Cinémas” starting on Monday, Dec. 12. Every day at 7:30 p.m. from Dec. 12 until Dec. 23 we will show one holiday film. We are hosting this event to bring the community together cozily this festive season.

Like an advent calendar, the box office will open every day for customers to purchase their tickets in person or online. In addition, because this is the season of giving, Ciné will donate 12% of total ticket sales at the end of the event to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Athens so that our local children may experience the magic of the holiday season. We have partnered with this organization before as part of our “BLACK PANTHER” challenge when we offered special screenings for children in marginalized communities in Athens to see the film.

“The holiday season is a time for community,” says Pamela Kohn, executive director of Ciné. “Our theater is already committed to bringing the community together year-round through the art of film. This time of year, we are giving visitors a reason to warm their hearts knowing that their ticket proceeds are going to the boys and girls of Athens.”

The event is starting off strong on Dec. 12 with an independent film: “Happy Christmas” starring Anna Kendrick and Melanie Lynskey. Indie movie lovers will be pleased to see more titles throughout the event such as “C.R.A.Z.Y”, “Tangerine”, and “A Christmas Tale” mixed with big name classics such as “Elf”, “The Polar Express” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”.

To purchase tickets and view the complete list of films screening descriptions, head to Cine - movie times & tickets (athenscine.com). All showings for this event will take place in one of our two theaters located at 234 W Hancock Ave. Screenings will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. Plan to arrive before 7 p.m. to purchase tickets and concessions.

Happy holidays!

Cine Athens Blog Post - Ciné’s Employees are Ranking the Top Five Indie Films of 2022

Ciné is officially closing the curtains on 2022. We decided there is no better way to reminisce on the year we have had than by looking back at the best indie films that the industry offered us. Although Ciné's theaters are not limited to just showing independent films, we wanted to honor on our art house roots with all of you indie-film lovers. Each Ciné employee is ranking their top five films of the year (in no order – we already made them pick just five).

First in the series is Pamela Kohn, our executive director.

Crimes of the Future

Maybe we have not moved past “Schlocktoberfest” yet, because we had to include this arthouse body horror film from the same director as “The Fly”, one of our gut wrenching specials from our festival last month. A performance artist living in a synthetic environment publicly endures metamorphism, and humans are sprouting new mutations! If you can stomach it, you will be thinking about this unique take on human evolution for days.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

The title of this movie itself earned it a top five spot for finding words to describe what seems to be going on inside of our minds these days! This film has adventure, comedy, sci-fi, saving the multiverse, and a hatred for taxes, while touching on serious topics of depression and nihilism. Go watch it and figure out the meaning of life.

Nope

We had high expectations of Jordan Peele as a director after "Get Out"; our expectations were met. Peele touches on a myriad of heavy topics – the power filmmakers hold over humanity, the policing of surveillance culture, the archival of Black history, and of course, capitalism. We had a whole debate over which topic was meant to stand out the most. Watch the film and decide for yourself… or just enjoy the show.

Master

Not only is Athens, Georgia home to the best arthouse in history, but it is also a college town. This haunted film follows the stories of a professor and a freshman student at Ancaster College – maybe the University of Georgia has a ghost too! It teaches viewers about microaggressions that its Black characters face, reminding viewers of the racist reality of colleges in America.

Cha Cha Real Smooth

Relax and have a laugh with this romantic comedy. The film features a familiar protagonist: a recent college graduate with no plan for his future. This coming-of-age film beautifully navigates the complexity of young adult relationships while reminding us of how fun it was to be young with a how-to lesson on getting the party started.

We hope you were a fan of our top five or that you learned some new indie film titles to add to your watchlist. Head over to Ciné to fulfill your craving for more admirable independent films… or popcorn!
